If you’re on this page, my guess is your Schlage keypad lock suddenly stopped responding, and you’re not sure what to do about the issue. If that guess was correct, then keep reading as I’ll walk you through the steps to fix your Schlage lock that isn’t working because of cold weather. Let’s head right into it!

Schlage Keypad Lock not working in the cold; why is this happening?

There may be several reasons behind this issue. But for the most part, low batteries might be the reason your Schlage lock keypad isn’t working, as cold tends to drain batteries fast—especially when the keypad is exposed to wind chills.

Schlage Keypad Lock Not Working When Cold

With that in mind, let’s look at some tips that can help you fix the problem.

Schlage Keypad Lock Not Working When Cold: Try These Troubleshooting Tips

1. Replace the Batteries

As mentioned, your Schlage keypad lock batteries may drain quickly when exposed to cold, and the keypad won’t work if the batteries are low. So the first thing you want to do if your keypad isn’t responding is to replace the batteries to see if it fixes the problem.

So go ahead and replace the batteries and ensure you’re using the right batteries. Schlage recommends using only alkaline batteries—non-rechargeable. So don’t use lithium or any rechargeable batteries because you want them to last longer; they might cause other issues in your lock.

Also, make sure you reconnect the battery connector properly during the battery replacement.

Is the keypad now responding/working correctly? If so, Congratulations! But if not, continue to the next troubleshooting step.

2. Reset the Lock

Performing a factory reset on a Schlage keypad lock usually helps to fix any electronic issues. So if the keypad is still not responding, you want to reset the lock to see if it fixes the problem.

Follow the steps below to reset your Schlage keypad lock:

  • Step 1: On the interior assembly of your lock, remove the battery cover and then disconnect the battery.
  • Step 2: Press and release the Schlage button.
  • Step 3: Reconnect the battery and then press and hold the Schlage button until you hear a single beep and the indicator light illuminates green. Ensure you complete this step within 10 seconds.

Now your lock is reset, and that should fix the keypad issue—assuming you ticked the boxes in the first troubleshooting step. So try to operate the lock again to see if the issue is fixed.

Note: This reset method mostly works for Schlage BE365, FE557, and FE595 keypad locks. So if it doesn’t work for you, refer to your User Manual for reset instructions.

More so, keep in mind that all custom programming in your lock will be erased after performing a factory reset. So make sure to change the default Programming Code, delete existing User Codes, and add your own codes—for security reasons. You may go here to see how to reprogram your Schlage keypad lock.

That said, if your Schlage lock keypad isn’t still working as a result of a cold, and you’ve tried all the troubleshooting tips above, see the next step.

3. Remove the Lock from the Door and Fix the Spring

There’s a plastic piece inside the lock that might have shifted from its position—hence causing the keypad issues. To fix this, you’ll have to remove the lock from the door, disassemble it and then reposition the plastic piece onto the spring.

Sounds like what might be difficult to do? I get that. Here is a video that explains how to disassemble your Schlage keypad lock and put the plastic piece into place.

More so, spraying a dry lubricant into the keyhole may help fix the issue. So if you’re unable to remove the lock from the door and fix the spring, as explained in the above video, try spraying a dry lubricant into the lock keyhole to see if it works.

After spraying the lubricant, insert a key into the keyhole and turn it around to spread the lube into the lock.
