How We Chose the Best Smart Lock Door Handles

When choosing the best smart door lock door handles, there are a few things to consider. One big factor is price. Smart lock door handles can range from around $100 to upwards of $300.

The more features included, the higher you can expect the price to be.

Another factor to consider is the compatibility with your devices. Most smart locks pair with a mobile app that allows you to lock and unlock your doors easily. Some smart locks can also be paired with existing deadbolts.

Smart locks also allow you to add permanent and temporary users with their custom codes and set access schedules for specific dates and times. Activity logs allow you to see who used the door codes and when.

Some smart door locks are Bluetooth-enabled, while others require wi-fi connectivity which may require a separate device to connect wirelessly.

The most sophisticated locks offer voice controls, geofencing, and auto-locking features.

Geofencing means you never have to wonder if you locked the door or not. Once you (and your device) are a certain distance away from the lock, the lock automatically engages.

The auto-lock feature is similar. It will automatically lock after being left unlocked for a certain time.

In the event of a break-in or if the lock has been tampered with, some locks will send push, text, and email notifications that will let you know in real-time when anyone enters or leaves.

We put the most popular smart locks to the test and determined 8 of them to be our top picks. Each lock stands out in a particular way, so we’ll tell you which ones we liked and why.

  • 5 ways to engage the lock
  • Up to 1-year battery life
  • Screwdriver included for installation
  • Can be used for left-handed and right-handed doors

What We Didn’t Like

  • No remote access

This Ultraloq Smart Lock has a great quality build, is ideal for front doors, and will fit most standard door sizes. We love that this is an easy smart lock to install.

There are four modes for entry: access codes, fingerprint, smartphone, and key. We liked the fact that this lock does not come 100% keyless. If the battery is dead, you still have the option to use a key to open the door.

This smart lock handle is also equipped with an anti-peep touch keypad technology, which prevents those standing next to or behind you from stealing your access code when input into the keypad.

If you want to completely prevent peeping, use your fingerprint for faster access.

Within the app, you will have the ability to create temporary access for visitors and check entry history.

Colors Available: Iron Black | Batteries Required? Yes | Batteries Included? Yes | Warranty: 3-year electronics and lifetime mechanical and finish warranty | Features Auto-lock, up to 30 unique user codes

What We Liked

  • BHMA Commercial Grade 2 certified
  • Long battery life
  • Easy to change the battery
  • East to add/program/delete codes
  • Heavy-duty design

What We Didn’t Like

  • No Bluetooth capability
  • No wi-fi
  • No smart capabilities

The SmartCode 955 is extremely durable and brilliantly designed. It fits most front door designs and can also be used on private restrooms, storage drawers, vacation rentals, etc.

Up to 30 user codes can be set for members of the house and any other visitors that you grant access.

The manufacturer claims the battery can last for up to three years. Our experience is that the batteries drain faster in harsh climates, but you can expect at least a 1.5-year battery lifespan.

It can be used in any weather thanks to its durable build, and the reversible lever can be fitted to both left and right-handed doors.

The flexibility of the auto-lock is something that we love about this handle. The timer can be adjusted for 1-99 seconds before locking the door.

With SmartKey Security integrated into this lock, it is pick resistant and bump-proof.

However, one downfall of this handle is the lack of connectivity via Bluetooth or wi-fi. This simple fact is why it didn’t end up higher on our list.

Battery Life5/5

Colors Available: Silver | Batteries Required? Yes | Batteries Included? Yes | Warranty: 3-year electronics and lifetime mechanical and finish warranty | Features: App sends low battery reminders, includes physical keys

What We Liked

  • Multiple unlock options
  • Easy installation
  • Multiple temporary passcodes

What We Didn’t Like

  • No wi-fi access without buying separate accessories
  • No flexibility on auto-lock feature

We love how sturdy this Wandoo smart lock is. The build quality is one of the best we tested, and the features are outstanding.

The connectivity options on this lock are second to none. You can unlock via the app using Bluetooth, a PIN code, or the included physical keys.

One thing that we didn’t find on many other options was the battery backup. According to the manufacturer, the 4 AA batteries give enough power to unlock the door 5,000 times.

If the smart lock was to fully die, it can be charged with a 9V battery to gain access. Alternatively, the key can be used to unlock the door.

Like others on this list, there is an anti-peep code function on this lock. According to the manufacturer, strangers can not steal your code by looking at worn-out keypad digits or watching you nearby when you enter the password.

Any random digits can be entered to confuse a would-be thief, and you will still gain access as long as the correct code is embedded in the longer set of numbers.

There is also a remote control option as well via the app. The set code can be timed, permanent, one-time, or cyclic.

Colors Available: Silver | Batteries Required? Yes | Batteries Included? Yes | Warranty: Lifetime mechanical and finish, one year electronic | Features Flex lock, illuminated keypad, codes can be added or deleted at the keypad

What We Liked

  • Flex-lock
  • Single-button locking
  • Keyless entry
  • Universal latches and deadbolts
  • Can be unlocked with a key

What We Didn’t Like

  • Battery replacement requires the lock to be minimally disassembled

Schlage is a name that many consumers associate with quality products and this smart door lock is no different. The build quality is mentioned time and time again in the reviews, and it held up well during our testing.

The reason that we have dubbed this specific lock most weatherproof is the fact that it can withstand temperatures from -4°F to 158°F and is waterproof. So, whatever climate you may live in, this lock can take whatever Mother Nature throws at it.

Running late to work or an appointment? We’ve all been there. Locking the door should be the least of your worries. Schlage has considered this. To lock the door, all you have to do is push the Schlage button and turn the deadbolt, and the door is locked.

When you get home, all you have to do is enter your code to unlock the door.

It is super weatherproof and ANSI/BHMA grade 2 certified, so Schlage’s top priority is your security. But they also want you to be able to gain access whenever you need to, which is where the flex lock feature comes in handy.

One thing that didn’t impress us was that there are only 19 user codes available to be set. Others on this list have more, so if you have a large family or a lot of friends, maybe this isn’t the smart lock for you.

6. Best Design: YIMOOCH Electronic Keypad Deadbolt with Heavy Duty Door Handle

YIMOOCH Electronic Keypad Deadbolt With Heavy Duty Door Handle

Product Ratings

Affordability3/5
Durability5/5
Reliability5/5
Features2/5
Battery Life4/5

Colors Available: Silver | Batteries Required? Yes | Batteries Included? Yes | Warranty: Lifetime mechanical and finish, one year electronic | Features IP65 Waterproof, auto-lock, one-touch locking

What We Liked

  • Modern design works with many house styles
  • Keyless entry is reliable
  • Can be programmed with up to 50 user codes

What We Didn’t Like

  • No app to track activity
  • No wi-fi connectivity
  • No physical key

This YIMOOCH smart door lock is not the most expensive on our list, but it isn’t the cheapest either (we’re getting to that one). We think that it is a great balance between price and features.

Many others on this list have wi-fi and Bluetooth capabilities. However, this one does not have either. There is no app to connect either. Some may see this as an asset while it may be a deal-breaker for others.

The lack of high-tech connectivity and features makes this a great lock for those who want a sleek lock with minimal complications. While you can’t track entry with an app, it works smoothly and reliably to keep your home secure.

We absolutely love the design of this smart lock. If it’s a modern aesthetic you’re looking for and the lack of connectivity doesn’t bother you, then this is the one for you.

7. Best for Smart Lock Beginners: Schlage Connect Camelot Touchscreen Deadbolt

Product Ratings

Durability4/5
Reliability5/5
Features5/5
Battery Life5/5

Colors Available: Satin nickel | Batteries Required? Yes | Batteries Included? Yes | Warranty: Lifetime mechanical and finish, one year electronic | Features IP65 Waterproof, auto-lock, one-touch locking

What We Liked

  • Works with Amazon Alexa
  • Grade 1 highest residential security rating
  • Easy installation in about an hour
  • Long battery life

What We Didn’t Like

  • Requires additional accessories to connect to smart assistant
  • Auto-lock timing is not flexible
  • More expensive than other smart locks we tested

The manufacturer claims that the 4 included AA batteries will last 8766 hours in this lock. We’re not about waiting around to see if that’s true, but we feel certain that it will last a long time. The reviews seem to confirm this as well.

We like the Schlage brand, so their products have landed on our list more than once. As with others on this list, users say that this lock seems to hold up well to the weather.

One thing we weren’t quite fond of was the price tag. At more than $300, it was a bit of a turn-off, but for the quality and features that you get, we understand why it retails for that price.

While it may be a bit pricier, the quick installation, ease of use, and long battery life make this a great model for the beginner smart lock user.

8. Most Affordable Smart Lock: Amazon Basics Grade 3 Electronic Touchscreen Deadbolt Door Lock

Amazon Basics Grade 3 Electronic Touchscreen Deadbolt Door Lock

Product Ratings

Affordability5/5
Durability2/5
Reliability3/5
Features2/5
Battery Life3/5

Colors Available: Matte black | Batteries Required? Yes | Batteries Included? Yes | Warranty: One year limited warranty | Features: 30 customizable 4-10 digit codes

What We Liked

  • Secure keyless entry
  • No smartphone or smart hub connections
  • More affordable than most other smart locks

What We Didn’t Like

  • Warranty is limited to certain conditions
  • Reviews say the keypad doesn’t always work or illuminate
  • Shorter battery life than we like
  • Takes only 6 user codes
  • Some issues with latch reported

We chose this as our most affordable smart lock, but it is not rated for outdoor use, which is why it’s so cheap. It cannot be placed where it may be exposed to rain or snow.

Other than that, it has plenty of other useful features and is easy to install. We saw no complaints about the build quality either. But it is still definitely NOT waterproof. It would be a great addition to an interior door from the garage.

If you are looking for something sturdy, waterproof, and durable, this is not for you. But if you just need to put a lock on an office door, garage door, or storage room, then this may be the best bang for your buck.

The Winner

We chose the Yale Assure Lock SL as the best overall, not because it excelled in every category we considered. The durability, reliability, features, and battery life are by far the best that we found for the price.

And the icing on the cake is the traditional design that goes with pretty much any home or other building style.

How to Choose the Best Smart Lock Door Handles

There are so many smart locks available, and new models hit the store shelves frequently. How do you choose the right lock for your home with so many options? Here are the factors we consider when choosing smart locks.

Where Will the Lock Be Used?

Are you looking to spruce up your front door, or will it be used in an indoor setting? The durability will be a big factor when choosing the right lock for your door.

Consider your budget for the lock. This may limit or allow you certain features. The locks on our list span the gamut from under $100 to almost $400.

The features between the most expensive and the cheapest on our list are vastly different. Some smart locks require accessories to take full advantage of connectivity and other features, so consider that cost if those features are important to you.

How Often Will the Lock Be Used?

If the handle is used more often, like in an office setting, battery life may be a big factor in your decision. If it is for your front door, which may not be used as much as an interior garage door, then the battery life may not be as important.

Aesthetic

Is your home or business designed to appeal to a more modern aesthetic? The styles of the locks on this list vary as much or more than the prices. Some brands sell locks that are coordinated so you can choose interior and exterior door locks to match.
